Slit tining greens

We slit tined our greens today. This process has many advantages, regular slit tining breaks up soil compaction and provides optimal conditions for healthy root growth, cutting thousands of roots and in turn promoting thousands more to grow. It also increases air movement within the soil, which is essential for healthy turf.

  1. and all these thousands of roots growing do not help if there is an on going thatch problem. The creation of more organic material is not wanted.
It is better hollow tine and remove the offending organic matter and compacted soand in introduce a better rooting medium with high sand content. Ps the use of a heavy mini tractor on a golf green squeezing the life out of the soil rather defeats the object. Of course all your equipment manufacturers will tell you different.
yours Mr. The old ways are best. God gave greenkeepers legs and muscel - USE THEM!

  2. We hollow tine twice a year and top dress on a regular basis so our thatch levels are very low. I see your point about the tractor, unfortunately we have nothing lighter to hook it up to right now.
